Yahoo has closed geocities and it truly is the end of an era. Geocities was largely popular in the 1990’s but didn’t really evolve and its not very surprising that Geocities met its doom after ten years. What I never could understand was didn’t yahoo try to reliance geocities under a new name and upgraded its featured, there is no doubt in my mind systems like geocities have the potential to be very popular, like yola.com who is very similar to geocities received $20 million in venture capital in a global recession. But like I said Geocities never really kept with the times and was basically a huge network full of amateur and mostly very ugly websites. Yahoo.com released this statement : We have enjoyed hosting web sites created by Yahoo! users all over the world, and we're proud of the community you've built. "However, we have decided to focus on helping our customers explore and build relationships online in other ways. Beginning on October 26, 2009, you can no longer use GeoCities to maintain a free presence online — but we're excited about the other services we have designed to help you connect with friends and family and share your activities and interests." I still remember creating my first website on geocities…till we meet again.(start playing the sappy music now)
