Google goes tribal (2009 Sept-18)

Google Translate have added the first African languages to their system.Afrikaans has now been added to the mix and can be translated to and from 51 other languages.

Afrikaans being my native language I’ve tried using it only to end-up in total confusion. The straight forward translation of words seem to be working fine although it does have a limited index of words, but when a sentence just gets a little bit more complicated the whole thing ends in disarray.

Personally I feel this is a weak attempt seeing that I’m not a big fan of Google Translate in the first place , but it is a step in the right direction to empowering African Languages.

“At Google we believe that the Internet is about enabling access to the world’s information — all of the world’s information, in all of its languages. Today’s launch of Google Translate in nine new languages makes it easier to access web content from all over the web, even when it was written in  language not your own.” says Tom Stocky, Director of Product Management at Google.

Google won’t be remembered for its translation capabilities but it does spark the imagination. You can have a look at the Afrikaans Translator here:

Google isn’t the only internet giant that has noticed Afrikaans as a dominant  African language, recently Facebook has also extended its service to support Afrikaans as a Interface language ,which I helped start! To select Afrikaans as your Facebook Interface language just click here and select Afrikaans.Wikipedia has also joined the ranks and is also offering Afrikaans as one of their encyclopedia languages.
